Psychological Science in a Modern, Fragmented World

Psychological Science, Suspended

It is sometimes a suspension of the mind in between knowledge and feeling, between reason and confusion in life. Being a licensed psychologist in India, it is a common occurrence to find that this state defines the modern psyche. We are in the era of continuous stimulation where the nervous system is over-stimulated, and attention is divided. Psychology has always tried to explain the reason behind our way of thinking, feeling and acting as we do. In this digital, accelerated world, however, even the very science of psychology itself is suspended, torn between information and human personality, between research and experience. This article discusses the ways in which we may strike balance between science and the soul in order to reconnect with ourselves.

Knowing the Suspension in Psychological Science

Psychology had a starting point in the relationship between philosophy and biology, which is the study of the mind based on observation, reflection, and evidence. Gradually it became a data science that can quantitate emotion and behavior accurately. However, somewhere in the path the human experience, the very core of psychology, became difficult to measure.

Knowing the Suspension in Psychological Science

As an individual therapist, I have had many experiences of encountering clients who are detached but not because they are ignorant. They understand the lingo of mental health, know trauma, and feel safe or unfulfilled with the names of the chemicals behind their moods. It is what I refer to as suspended psychological science, when theory is suspended over experience. It is not that science has failed us, but we need to make it come closer to people and their experiences.

The importance of this to Emotional Well-being

Ignorance in the absence of embodiment, is resembling light without heat. Learning the mechanism of the brain is empowering, yet the brain cannot heal without a connection. As soon as we transform psychology into an idea and not into a reality, we are deprived of the empathy that renders it human.

It is the reason why emotional education has to develop in tandem with research. Self-regulation, naming of feelings, sitting with discomfort are not skills acquired in therapy only, but also skills acquired in life. In India, I have been able to help clients in other continents who are aware of what self-care entails, yet they are out of touch with themselves. They do not need more information, but meaning.

Therapy changes when science is combined with self-awareness. It ceases to be fixative and turns out to be comprehensible. It is not perfection but being there, returning to the rhythm of the life process.

The Elements of This Suspension

This separation between knowledge and emotion is usually manifested in the form of overthinking, overstimulation and overidentification.

  • Overthinking causes us to be in endless analysis rather than living.
  • Our senses are overstimulated so that we are numbed emotionally.
  • The overidentification causes us to confuse thoughts or trauma to identity, forgetting who we are beyond that.

As a psychologist in India, I have observed people keeping these states in themselves as failures. It is a fact that they are signs of a culture that appreciates performance at the expense of presence. The initial move towards achieving a balance is to slow down that is not to escape but as an opposing to the havoc surrounding us.

Reviving Psychology to Humanity | Psychological Science

As psychological science is suspended, it is necessary to establish it once again by means of human contact. It is a combination of scientific approaches to evidence-based practices and compassion, cultural awareness and narrative. During treatment, I could apply cognitive models to assist in reprocessing thoughts, but combine them with mindfulness or narrative therapy.

This combination of the structure and the sensitivity makes therapy to give justice to science and the spirit. I have practiced this balance and it has enabled me to make therapy approachable, intimate and highly relatable through my practice including online psychologist consultation in India. What is so strong about psychology is not just its structures but its capacity to get adjusted in all individual human histories.

Misconceptions about Modern Psychological Science

There is a stereotype that psychology is fast. Real healing is hardly linear and it is slow, circular and very intimate. Another myth is that therapy is only when a person is in distress. Clients who want to know more about themselves, not to be relieved of crisis have also been some of the most transformative sessions by my standards.

Another important thing is that one should challenge the notion that growth occurs in isolation. Healing, in my experience as an individual therapist, flourishes in relationships, both with others, with meaning, and with society. The self does not develop in isolation but relates, and therapy assists in fostering the awareness.

The Changing Realm of Therapy

The world has now entered the age of interaction between technology and psychology. The new face of healing is redefining the way we are healing by using virtual therapy, neuroscience based tools, and holistic methods. Although such developments increase the reach, the core of treatment is still human.

True healing occurs in connection and authenticity even during online consultations of psychologists in India. On both sides of the line, change is made when knowledge takes the place of opinion. We have the duty of making sure that science does not lose its way as psychology lends itself to humanity, with its development.

Returning to Stillness

Stillness is radical in a motion addicted world. But yet is tranquility where truth abides. By the fact that I say a psychological science is suspended, I do not imply that I mean it is broken–it is waiting to be grounded. Biding us wait till we will stop and know what we know with our bodies.

It is that pause, in essence, constituting therapy. It is where we have gotten away with running, and have begun to listen to our stories, our bodies and our silence. Slowing down will enable integration whether it is face to face sessions or online psychologist sessions. Stillness is accompanied by science; without stillness science is meaningless. That is where the actual healing starts.

Conclusion

The science of psychology can be held between the head and the heart or so, but it is one of the most significant instruments of self-knowledge. It is not a choice between data and depth, but rather a blend of the two, that is, knowledge should inform empathy and empathy inform insight.

This is because as a licensed psychologist in India, I have realized that change occurs when we rejoin the scientific and the spiritual, the external and the inner. To feel as much as we think we permit ourselves to do, we are whole once more.

In case you are willing to contemplate that balance, start by consulting an online psychologist in India. Grounding does not always start with answers but with answering once.
