The process of healing is perceived as a linear process, which is the continuous process of climbing upwards towards recovery with no downfalls. However, I am an experienced psychologist in India and a therapist in Mumbai whose specialization is individual therapy, child counseling and family therapy in Mumbai and I know that healing is more like taking care of a garden. There are days, however, when you see new blossoms; there are days when it seems to you that nothing is growing at all. However, there is deeper development happening under the surface.
Healing does not mean being perfect but being present. It is just about showing up to yourself daily, tending to your inner ground with gentleness, breathing in slowly. These little, regular steps are what lead to significant change in the long run. I explain how the adoption of this subtle process can make people in India develop emotional health and sustainable healing in this blog.
1. Healing as a Non-Linear Journey
Most of my clients, whether teen therapy, depression therapy, or anxiety management programs in Mumbai become discouraged when they make setbacks or feel stagnant. This is perfectly normal. The process of healing is not a linear, predictable process but a reversal and forward movement, a high and low.

Similar to a garden, growing takes place invisibly in the roots and then there is growth of the buds. The heart and the brain control and heal without much conscious thought. The concept of healing as non-linear helps to be self-sensitive and tolerant.
2. The Power of Daily Presence and Kindness
Appearing day in day out – even making little steps- develops resilience. This could involve participating in therapeutic sessions or journaling or engaging in mindfulness or just accepting painful feelings without condemnation. A safe inner environment is achieved through consistency and within it, growth can be realized.
During individual therapy and group therapy in Mumbai, I would focus on practicing kindness towards oneself, particularly on bad days. When we become the same empathetic and patient with ourselves as we are with others, we heal more, and we also create hope.
3. Breathing Through the Slow Days—Mindful Resilience
Breath is also an effective method of sticking to the present in times of floods or stagnation. Pranayama or deep-diaphragmatic breathing is a breathing practice that has been practiced traditionally in India and much of modern day therapy integrates it with the practice.
To help clients with emotional health, as a lesson, I instruct them to take deep breaths when faced with challenging emotions, as they will dissipate, and the tension will decrease. This assists in decreasing anxiety and PTSD symptoms and harmonizing the nervous system and letting the healing process happen through its own process.
Conclusion: Transformation Through Gentle Repetition
The process of showing up, breathing and repeating is called healing but it is done day after day. It is the little, daily steps, such as the watering of a garden, which ultimately bring forth the brightest flowers. In case of someone you love or yourself being on a healing mission, you will know that you are making progress where you cannot see, and even a single effort does not go to waste.
Being a licensed psychologist in India, I would urge families and individuals to celebrate their speed and be comfortable with flaws and find empathetic help. Online psychologist consultation in India or face-to-face couple counselling in Mumbai, regardless, we can always be healed when we are given time to be and show them some love.
